ABS-CBN and Dreamscape Entertainment proudly present their newest action-drama masterpiece, “Roja.” With a powerhouse ensemble cast lead by Donny Pangilinan, Kyle Echarri, and Maymay Entrata, the series promises a world full of secrets, friendships turning into rivalries, and heart-wrenching family drama.
The pilot episode, aired on November 24, takes us to the breathtaking shores of La Playa Roja, a resort where “opulence comes naturally.” Guests are welcomed by the serene ocean views and the promise of peace of mind, with services and amenities curated very well. As head chef of the resort, Liam (Donny Pangilinan) leads the culinary team.
We are later on introduced to Olsen (Kyle Echarri), part of the resort’s security team, trained under his grandfather who heads guest safety. He used to be Liam's close friend, but Olsen is now his rival, their bond ruined by betrayal and secrets.
Flashbacks: Liam's struggles and family secrets
Flashback to when Liam decided to pursue his passion for cooking, where he once clashed with his father Magnus (Raymond Bagatsing). “Sabi ko sa kanya, napagbigyan ko na siya sa kursong gusto niyang kunin ko, eh naka-graduate naman ako. Ngayon, gusto kong gawin ‘yong passion ko.” He tells Luna (Maymay Entrata) over the phone.
Liam and Luna were classmates in culinary school, but his journey was marred by heartbreak. One morning, Liam discovered his father’s affair with Ayen (Yassi Pressman), a revelation that shattered him. His mother, Greta Roja (Lorna Tolentino), soon found out the betrayal herself, confronting Magnus and his lover. Greta’s despair left Liam torn between protecting her and taking in his father’s sins.
Despite the chaos at home, Liam found guidance under Olsen’s grandfather, Chief Ben (Levi Ignacio), who trained him in self-defense, discipline, and other means through Arnis. Yet betrayal followed him everywhere---Liam caught sight of Olsen with his father, secretly meeting Ayen, deepening his anger towards Magnus and this time, with Olsen.
Returning home from school, Liam discovered Greta drowning herself in alcohol and pills. He rushed to care for her, offering comfort and urging her to leave Magnus for good. Greta, however, refused, blaming herself for her choices. Liam reassured her, “Hindi mo kasalanan ‘to. Kailangan malaman ni Papa na this is all his fault.”
Later that night, Liam confronted Magnus, only to be blamed for Greta’s suffering. Magnus accused Liam of meddling and told him that Olsen was his source. Liam confronted Olsen, causing an argument. Magnus gaslighted Liam further by insisting he and Greta had already reconciled. Liam still lashed out “Kayo ang unang tumraydor sa pamilyang ‘to!”
This earned him a violent punch from his father, “Wala kang alam sa nangyayari, kaya ‘wag ka nang makialam.”
From best friends to rivals
Chief Ben arrived and asked Liam what happened. He apologized on behalf of his grandchild, Olsen, who is becoming closer to his father. As they train, Ben explained, “Lumaki kasi siyang walang ama. Siguro alam mo ang pinagdadaanan niya, ‘di ba?” He asked Liam to be more understanding of Olsen.
Liam reiterated that it is not a good enough reason for Olsen to make up stories, “Muntik nang mamatay ang mama ko tapos sisiraan niya pa ‘ko.” Ben assures him that he will talk to his grandchild.
Meanwhile, Liam is becoming more skilled in Arnis. Olsen arrived, informing them that Ben is being called to work. He picked up the Arnis sticks and said to Liam, “Tagal na nating ‘di nag-arnis, ah?” The two then sparred.
“Liam, alam kong galit ka,” Olsen said “Pero wala akong magawa!” He explained that his father forced him to confess. He added that he saw Liam the other day---when Liam witnessed the secret meeting between Ayen and his father---and that he also saw Liam talking to Greta.
This enraged Liam even more, his dark eyes fixed on Olsen as they fight. “Oo, nakita mo,” Liam snapped. “Pero nakita mong nagsumbong ako, ha?! Narinig mo?!” He lashed out, “At ikaw! Alam mo palang nambababae si Papa! Tapos kinukunsinti mo, ha?!”
Now it is Olsen’s turn to be furious, “Empleyado lang ako dito. Ikaw nga walang magawa, ako pa?!” He fired back. Liam countered, “Ang problema sa’yo, gagawin mo lahat para maging bida ka!” The two continue their heated brawl.
Luna arrived, stopping them both as they pant heavily. Olsen is confused to see her, while Liam admits he asked her to come because he needed someone to talk to---he no longer has a trusted friend.
The VIP roster of La Playa Roja
Back in the present, at the huddle, Happy (Rubi Rubi) informs the hotel staff about the important and high-profile guests arriving at the resort, including Dr. Jessie Morillo (Robert Seña) and Coney Morillo (Sandy Andolong), accompanied by Coney's personal nurse, Claire Alegre (Rans Rifol). Love (Inka Magnaye) will be in charge of them. “Mga regular VIP natin ‘yan,” says Happy. The couple will be coming to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary.
Meanwhile, Grace (Vangie Castillo) will be in charge of the social media influencers: Jules Santos (AC Bonifacio), her best friend Ice Mercado (Kai Montinola), and Bogs Lim (Emilio Daez), along with their manager, Mama Ona Chan (Xilhouette). Smile (Rikki Mae Davao) will handle Engineer Mike (Cris Villanueva) and Architect Minnie Del Rosario (Nikki Valdez), together with their daughter Maddie (Zia Grace). The couple were the visionaries behind the beautiful structure of La Playa Roja.
Joy (Sophie Reyes) will take care of Macky Maristella (Kobie Brown), son of Senator Eduardo Maristella, who will arrive at the helipad with his bodyguards and entourage. He will be accompanied by Jabbas Cheng (Iñigo Jose), Boss Topak (Benedict Cua), and his girlfriend, Rita Prudencio (Maika Rivera).
Greta later arrives and starts to instruct the staff on proper etiquette, how to interact well with the guests, and emphasizes that presence of mind is essential. She then receives a phone call informing her that the last VIP guest, Bishop Anthony Narciso (Marc Abaya), has arrived at the hotel, completing the 200 guests of La Playa Roja.
The guests begin to arrive, with Fin (Igi Boy Flores) and Olsen welcoming them while the security team inspects their belongings. They come in one by one, including Mr. and Mrs. Del Rosario with their daughter Maddie. Doctor Jessie and nurse Claire arrive with Coney, who awkwardly asks Olsen if he and Liam are now on good terms. Olsen only smiles awkwardly in response. The influencers---Jules, Bogs, and Ice---so arrive, with Jules starting to get irritated by the security checks. Ice is held briefly when a fake gun is found among her belongings. She laughs it off, leaves the fake gun with security, and even flirts a little with Olsen before proceeding.
Greta's desperate plea to Liam
Liam works on the buffet for the guests, instructing his staff on everything that needs to be prepared. Luna notices him in a panic and tells him to take it easy. “Nakakalimutan mo nang huminga. Huminga ka nga nang malalim,” she reminds him, calming him down and assuring him that the guests are enjoying the food they are serving.
However, Luna feels sad knowing that Liam has to leave tomorrow, as he has been accepted for a scholarship at the Culinary Institute of America. She asks if Greta already knows. “Pagkatapos ng isang mahabang usapan, pumayag na siya,” Liam informs her. “Eh, sa papa mo, nagpaalam ka na ba?” Luna presses.
Liam shrugs off her question. “Sana man lang, bago ka umalis, magkaayos man lang kayo,” she says, reminding him that he and his father have not been on good terms since the affair was exposed. Luna convinces him to talk to his father. She grows emotional but remains proud of Liam.
Meanwhile, Liam sees Greta discreetly scolding the resort staff. He intervenes, explaining that the staff was not feeling well, and Greta calms down. Liam tells her to stay composed, “Gusto ko sana, pag-alis ko bukas, wala nang problema dito.”
Greta then tries to convince him not to leave, revealing that his father is planning to build recreational facilities on the southern part of the island---a golf course, bowling alley, and tennis court---and that Liam is being considered to manage them. But Liam insists on leaving, leaving Greta with no choice but to accept his decision.
Anthony smuggles a bag of weapons
Bishop Anthony arrives, carefully observing the resort and the other guests. It is his first time at La Playa Roja. As he enters the premises, Olsen inspects his belongings. The Bishop begins to look suspicious, watching Olsen closely. “Bless you,” Anthony says. They exchange glances, leaving Olsen baffled.
The Bishop, later on walks to another part of the island. There, he pulls up a rope tied to a hidden bag containing weapons, which he secretly smuggles into the resort.
He then calls “Uno” (Joel Torre) to inform him that he has successfully entered the resort premises. “Kapag naayos ko na ang lahat, tatawag ulit ako para ipaalam,” Anthony says. Uno replies, “Sige, nakahanda na kami.”
Meanwhile, on the other side of the island, Uno has set up his camp. Inside, he has built a detailed map of the resort, complete with information about the guests---their targets---including the Roja family.
At La Playa Roja, the guests enjoy the beauty of the resort, but tension grows behind the scenes, and the Roja family has no idea that trouble has already entered their paradise.
