“Someone, Someday” never hesitates to highlight its emotionally complex characters, especially Mariela Mercado (Rita Avila), the mother of Bea Mercado (Maja Salvador), who’s on a personal mission to ruin Billy Cariño’s (Kathryn Bernardo) seemingly perfect life.
Mariela wasn’t always a faultfinder when it came to Bea, as the painful experience of having been abandoned by her husband while also dealing with her eldest daughter’s death eventually led to her self-destructive behavior. Rather than being a purely evil antagonist, she acts more like a tragic villain, just waiting to be understood.

#1: Mariela’s biggest fear is Bea leaving her
When Mariela first heard Bea’s conversation with Caloy (McCoy de Leon) over the phone, she immediately criticized her, assuming that they were in a relationship. Bea then strongly denied her romantic connection with Caloy, assuring that she won’t follow in the footsteps of her unfaithful father, who abandoned their family years ago.
From the moment they were left with nothing, Bea kept looking for jobs not only to improve their struggling lives but also for Mariela to finally have a reason to be proud of her.
#2: Mariela considers cooperating with Caloy against Billy
A few moments after the unconscious Billy were brought to the hospital due to Caloy’s unexpected attack, Mariela disclosed that she would gladly team up with Caloy in the event that Bea can’t continue her revenge against Billy for allegedly making their lives miserable.
Although Bea was surprised by Mariela’s change of heart towards Caloy, she insisted that Mariela stay out of their risky alliance.
While Bea commented on how Caloy’s messy strategy to intimidate Billy might actually prove effective, Mariela reminded her that she didn’t want to experience loneliness again, particularly when Bea got detained.

In light of Caloy’s serious assault and vandalism committed against Billy, the police eventually visited Mariela and Bea’s home to conduct an investigation. Despite the recognizable image of Billy’s vandalized house, both Bea and Mariela shamelessly repudiated their affiliation with Caloy again.

Precious also advised that all parents must teach their children the right things, instead of just covering up for their mistakes.

In spite of Bea’s unemployment, she and Mariela dined at an expensive restaurant. Delighted, Mariela vividly remembered the last time they ate at a fancy place, which was the time when the long-departed Abi received a promotion. Bea confidently expressed that her mother should simply trust her, and they eventually shared a toast.
#9: Mariela attempts to slap Billy
Inside the same restaurant, Billy arrived for an urgent meeting. Upon seeing Billy, Mariela instantly confronted her again, refusing to obey Bea’s reminders. As Billy defended herself from the relentless accusations and aggressive approaches, Mariela ultimately failed to slap her.

Bea pretended to be working, claiming that she has plenty to fix at the office. After hearing this, Mariela felt very proud of her, even mentioning that Bea is on the same level as Abi now. When Mariela went inside their house again, Bea took the chance to examine her resume nervously, implying that she hasn’t secured a job yet.
