There’s an oft-quoted adage that says, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Few characters embody this saying quite like Gabo, the lead character in the well-loved primetime action-drama series "Coco Martin’s Sigabo," compellingly portrayed by "Hari ng Aksyon sa Ating Henerasyon," Coco Martin. Often perceived as a hooligan because he frequently finds himself in trouble, Gabo is, more often than not, simply caught in unwarranted and precarious situations.
In spite of his rough reputation, Gabo is actually a good man with a heart of gold, always ready to lend a hand especially to those in need. Right from the pilot episode of "Sigabo," viewers immediately witnessed the selflessness of Gabo when he saved the passengers of a bus being robbed by a group of criminals. Although he had just been released from jail and vowed to live a brand-new life away from trouble, he couldn’t simply stand by and watch as the robbers threatened the terrified and defenseless passengers. So, despite being clearly outnumbered, he still chose to take on the criminals singlehandedly and even maneuvered the bus to safety after the driver got killed—ultimately saving everyone aboard.
Gabo also didn't let former pickpockets Tolits (Jerald Napoles), Binoy (Nikko Natividad), and Daboy (Mammoth) got away after stealing the wallet of a woman shopping at the market. Upon realizing what they'd done, he tripped them and forced them to return what they'd stolen, as well as urged the victim to have her revenge. After the woman slapped the trio one by one, Gabo warned them not to repeat their mistake and give them a kick in the back as they told them to leave already.
His willingness to step up for others was likewise evident when Gabo happened to be in the right place at the right time and saved TV reporter Salvador Manalo (Rey Campanilla) from goons who attempted to ambush him. Without hesitation, Gabo came to his rescue and managed to take down the attackers one by one despite facing them singlehandedly. Despite being far from wealthy himself, Gabo proved that financial hardship is no hindrance to helping those who are in greater need when he came across five young waste pickers who being beaten and reprimanded by an irate storeowner from whom they stole packs of bread. Aside from paying for the full cost of the stolen goods, Gabo also reproved the youngsters not to repeat their mistake and even handed them a P500 bill so they could buy food.
And lastly, Gabo once again put his courage and compassion on display when he stopped his longtime nemesis, Django (Jhong Hilario), from harassing a poor family grieving the loss of their patriarch and demanding the money they had collected from gamblers as “tong” or contributions. When the widow asked for his help, Gabo and his friends confronted Django and his henchmen and challenged them to a fight, prompting the group to retreat. The bereaved family couldn’t have been more grateful as, apart from driving Django and his gang away, Gabo also extended financial assistance to help them give their deceased patriarch a proper burial and send him to his final resting place.
From risking his life for strangers to helping families in their most difficult moments, he has shown that kindness and compassion can come from the most unexpected places. Through these five heroic deeds, Gabo proves that a person’s true character is not defined by how others see them, but by what they choose to do for others.
