MANILA — What if looking glamorous didn’t mean spending the evening adjusting a gown, struggling to sit down or waiting for the moment you could finally take off your shoes?
That is the question behind JC Buendia’s latest collection for this year's Red Charity Gala, where the Filipino designer is exploring what he calls “relaxed luxury.”

“Relaxed luxury, for me, is being able to look gorgeous in 30 minutes flat — and still be able to move, ride comfortably in a car, sit comfortably, and simply live your life,” Buendia said.
His collection, which will be presented October 3 at The Peninsula Manila in Makati City, is built around the idea that glamour and comfort do not have to be opposites.
“You shouldn’t have to sacrifice comfort to look beautiful,” Buendia said. “I want a woman to feel glamorous, but completely at ease — and I think that is a very modern kind of glamour.”
The philosophy grew partly from what Buendia has observed at fashion events, where women sometimes arrive in highly embellished, tightly fitted gowns that look spectacular but become increasingly difficult to wear as the evening progresses.
He also experienced that discomfort himself. At a private gathering with fellow designers, Buendia wore a corset gown for a beauty-pageant-inspired competition. The experience gave him a firsthand appreciation of how restrictive such a garment could be, including the marks it left on his body for days.
“That experience stayed with me,” he said. “Since then, I’ve become much more conscious about designing clothes that allow the body to move, breathe, sit, and simply enjoy the moment.”
That thinking informs the construction of the Red Charity Gala collection. Buendia is using bias cuts, which allow fabric to follow the body’s curves and move with the wearer, as well as A-line silhouettes that provide greater ease.
The collection also draws from Asian fashion, particularly the fluidity of the tunic, the freedom of high slits and the roominess of the kimono. Buendia was also inspired by the long, lean silhouettes of the ao dai and cheongsam.
Rather than reproduce those traditional forms, however, he is reinterpreting them for contemporary wear.
“I softened the silhouettes and used softer, more fluid fabrics instead of stiff or rigid materials,” he said. “The idea was to retain the elegance and discipline of these Asian silhouettes, while giving them more movement, more ease, and a more relaxed sense of luxury.”
For Buendia, relaxed luxury is ultimately less about dressing down glamour than redefining it.
“Fashion is not only meant to inspire and to make people dream. It is also meant to give back,” he said of the Red Charity Gala, which raises funds for charity. “For me, that makes being part of this Gala particularly meaningful.”
