MANILA – Globe Telecom said it has rerouted data traffic after a break in one of its international subsea fiber-optic cables caused intermittent and slower internet service for some mobile and broadband customers.
The disruption began Thursday night and reduced the available international bandwidth, resulting in slower browsing and lag when accessing some online services, the telecommunications company said.
Globe said it is using other international links and network redundancies to maintain connectivity while repairs are ongoing.
The company expects repairs to the damaged subsea cable to be completed within the next few weeks.
“Our teams are working continuously to ease congestion and restore normal internet service as quickly as possible. In parallel, we are working with our partners to validate the cause of the disruption,” said Joel Agustin, Globe senior vice president and head of Network Planning and Engineering.
Globe said its primary IT systems remain operational.
It also said a separate issue that earlier affected access to some applications, particularly during login attempts using Android phones, has already been resolved.
The company did not specify the location of the subsea cable break.
