MANILA— The Palace on Monday said they are carefully balancing the interests of commuters and transport workers in the implementation of the fare hike.
DOTr approves public transport fare increase
The minimum fare in jeepneys is now P14, after petitions by groups to increase the fare because of high diesel prices.
"Alam po natin na maraming mabibigatan sa pagtaas na ito ng pamasahe pero dapat nga din lang balansehin para sa kapakanan ng mga sa transport sektor at sa ating mga commuters. Hindi puwedeng ang isang grupo lang ang panalo," Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said.
She added they are also not afraid of the strike set by several transport groups this week.

Both Manibela and PISTON launched transport strikes to protest the skyrocketing prices of fuels.
"Ang gobyernong ito ay wala naman pong kinatatakutan, ang pagtatrabaho lang po ang kailangang gampanan," Castro said.

"Hindi naman po tinulugan ng gobyerno at hindi po sila sinisisi sa kanilang nararamdaman. Hindi binalewala kailanman ng gobyernong ito ang nararanasan ng mga miyembro dito, mga stakeholders sa transport sector," she added.
Castro said they are respecting the rights of transport workers to go on strike.
"Ang mga pagpoprotesta ay karapatan, katulad ng sinabi natin, never pong hinadlangan kahit kailan ng Pangulo ang anumang klaseng pagpoprotesta," she said.
"Ang hindi lang po dapat na gawin ay kung ito ay lumalabag na sa batas. So, kung ang Pangulo mismo ay kumikilala sa karapatan ng bawat isa, sa kanilang pananalita, sa kanilang pagpoprotesta na naaayon sa batas walang dapat katakutan ang pamahalaan," she added.
Castro said the government even prioritized transport workers in the distribution of cash aid when oil prices started to spike due to the war in the Middle East.
"Sila nga po ang unang binigyan ng ayuda kung ikukumpara sa ating mga commuters. Ang tanging hiling lamang din po ng pamahalaan ay maging balanse tayo sa pagtugon sa ganitong krisis na hindi ginusto ng gobyerno – krisis ito na nagmumula sa nangyayari sa Middle East, so, hindi po dapat sisihin ang gobyerno kung tumataas ang presyo ng krudo," she said.
