(UPDATED) Filipina Muay Thai star Islay Bomogao added to the country's golden haul in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games on Wednesday, turning back a home bet to rule the women's -45kg weight class.
Bomogao won against Thailand's Arissara Noon-Eiad, 29-28, in the gold medal match at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
It was an impressive result for Bomogao, capping a breakout year that has seen her thrive at the ONE Championship stage.
She had advanced to the final after her semifinal opponent, Mai Hoang Khanh of Vietnam, forfeited their match on Tuesday.
Speaking to POC Media after her victory, Bomogao said she tuned out external noise against Noon-Eiad, who enjoyed the support of the home crowd.
"Siyempre mas marami po siyang supporters since it's her home country, but I was more focused on my corner, on my coaches, and on my team in that one corner," said the pinweight fighter.
"Focused ng po talaga sa corner ko at kila coach," she added.
This is Bomogao's second SEA Games gold, having won in the form event in 2022.
Another Filipino athlete, LJ Rafael Yasay, added a second gold for the Muay Thai team when he ruled the men's 51kg weight class.
Yasay stopped his Malaysian opponent, Insyad Rumijam, in the second round to top the podium. A kick to the midsection got the job done for the 22-year-old.
"Sa round 1 feel ko na malakas 'yung left and right kicks niya pero feel ko kulang siya sa strength mentally so dun ko siya nabasa," said Yasa. "Lahat binuhos ko, nag all-out talaga ko (sa second round)."
Meanwhile, Tyron Jamborillo copped the silver in the men's -45kg class after a knockout loss to Thailand's Krittanu Saladkaew in the final.
