For the first time, the Philippines has a silver medal in archery in the Asian Games.
Veteran campaigner Amaya Cojuangco captured a landmark silver in the 20th Asian Games in Japan after bowing to her Indonesian foe in a thrilling final at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square on Thursday morning.
Cojuangco is the first archer from the Philippines to reach a gold medal match in the Asian Games, and her silver surpassed the bronze won by Paul Marton Dela Cruz in 2014 as the country's best-ever finish.
She went toe-to-toe with Indonesia's Nurisa Dian Ashrifah in the final, as they split the first four ends.
But Dian captured the fifth and final end, 29-27, for a slim 139-137 margin to secure the gold medal.
In reaching the final, Cojuangco dominated Iran's Bita Asheghzadeh Oskouei, 146-135, firing three perfect 30-point ends in the second, third, and fifth games.
She then outlasted South Korea's Park Jungyoon, 142-141, in the semifinals to book a historic semis berth.
Her silver medal is the Philippines' fourth in the Asiad.
