MANILA — Hidilyn Diaz's lifetime free fuel incentive became the talk of the town again amid soaring oil prices globally.
Social media users were quick to recall Diaz's incentive, which she received from Phoenix Petroleum, after winning the country's first gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by ruling the women's 55kg weight class in weightlifting.
Motorists promptly filled up their tanks as fuel prices are expected to go up P17 to P24 per liter this week. Fuel companies agreed to divide the amounts over several days or "stagger" the implementation of the hikes instead of delivering a one-time big-time price hike.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin recently said that she is backing the distribution of fuel subsidies to farmers, fisherfolk and public transport drivers.
