Canadian-American actor Jim Carrey has become the center of online speculation after his recent appearance at the César Awards in Paris prompted conspiracy theories from social media users.

Jim attended the 51st edition of the ceremony on February 26, where he received the honorary César d’honneur in recognition of his contributions to film and television.

During the event, the actor surprised attendees when he delivered his entire acceptance speech in French. The move drew applause from the audience despite what he humorously described as his imperfect accent.

“How was my French? Almost mediocre, right?” Jim joked while accepting the award, adding that he has a French relative dating back “around 300 years ago.”

While the moment was celebrated during the ceremony, The Mask actor’s appearance quickly became a trending topic online afterward. Photos and video clips circulated widely, with some commenters claiming the actor looked noticeably different.

Observers pointed to his fuller facial features, smoother complexion, and shoulder-length dyed hair, with some saying the star appeared “unrecognizable.” Several internet users even floated conspiracy theories suggesting the person at the event might have been an impersonator or a clone.

The speculation gained more attention when drag artist Alexis Stone uploaded a now-viral Instagram post on March 1 claiming to have impersonated the actor. The post included photos of Jim along with an unverified image showing what appeared to be a prosthetic face, fake teeth, a wig and makeup displayed on a desk with the Eiffel Tower visible nearby.

Even celebrities and netizens have shared their reactions to the speculations in the comments section.

“i can’t handle any more stress right now i need to know if this is real,” wrote Megan Fox.

“I DONT KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE,” another netizen added.

Following this, organizers of the awards ceremony dismissed the rumors and said that Jim himself attended the event.

Grégory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, described the actor’s appearance as authentic. He also rejected the conspiracy theories, calling them a “non-issue,” while recalling the months of preparation leading up to Jim’s participation in the ceremony.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words,” he said. “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”

“For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance,” he emphasized.

Jim’s representative also confirmed his attendance. In a statement to PEOPLE magazine on March 2, the actor’s spokesperson said, “Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award.”

As of this writing, Jim has not personally addressed the online speculation.

At the ceremony, the actor appeared alongside members of his family, including his daughter Jane and grandson Jackson, as well as his companion Min Ah, whom he acknowledged during his speech.

Over the years, similar conspiracy theories have circulated online involving other celebrities, including Avril Lavigne and Selena Gomez. These claims have repeatedly been debunked and remain unsubstantiated.
