Among the 19 student short films competing at the CinePanalo Film Festival 2026, "Bumtak Sara ti Nuangen" stands out as the student shorts lineup’s only comedy, camp, and satire entry.
Directed and written by Lloyd Pereira, the 20-minute Ilocano-Tagalog film follows Gabriella “Ella” Isinilang, played by Belle Francisco, a young woman from Barangay Sinukuan whose approved visa for Canada makes her the town’s first aspiring overseas Filipino worker.

While Ella sees the journey as a personal mission to find her estranged mother, her community treats the news as a collective financial breakthrough.
Her departure soon becomes a frenzy of gossip, pasalubong requests, political posturing, and emotional performances.
Led by Lola Chora (Riya Miranda), Aunt Fe (Tina dela Cruz), Aling Busyang (Christina Simon), Lolo Idong (Alfredo Montano), Kapitan Rey (Rani Caldoza), and Ella’s friend Jenifer (Alison Araña), the film’s colorful ensemble reflects the warmth, intrusiveness, opportunism, and affection that often define close-knit rural communities.
Through its campy send-off ceremony and increasingly chaotic preparations, the film satirizes how a person’s decision to work abroad can become a community event.

It also examines how one individual’s dream can become burdened by the hopes and expectations of everyone left behind.
For Pereira, an emerging filmmaker and Bachelor of Arts in Broadcasting student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, the story is rooted in memories of growing up in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija.
He describes the film as a tribute to the community that shaped him, portraying its people as nosy, dramatic, and opportunistic, but also as the same individuals who provide the foundation for young people’s ambitions.
Produced under HLMYK and Drifting Togue by Raymundo Cabintoy, with Rence Danielle Perez serving as co-producer and creative producer, "Bumtak Sara ti Nuangen" features cinematography by Daryll Anuran, production design by Sean Verdejo, editing by Allen A. Prodigalidad, music by Buch Dacanay, and sound by Hannah Gagalac.
The film is part of Set D in the Student Shorts Category of CinePanalo 2026 that will be screening until October 4 at participating cinemas, including Gateway Cineplex 18 and selected Ayala Malls cinemas.
