Filipina drag artist M1ss Jade So has strutted her way into the grand finale of "Drag Race Down Under vs the World."
Despite facing a semifinal hurdle, Jade secured a spot in the Top 4 of the inaugural season, alongside UK queen Michael Marouli and Down Under contenders Vybe and Art Simone.
In the episode aired Friday, September 4, the remaining queens were tasked with giving a makeover to a group of Australian hunks, transforming their partners into their “bosom buddies.”
As the queens worked to build a connection with their makeover partners, Jade introduced Matthew to one of her signature kooky antics: her unconventional meditation routine. The playful moment echoed the eccentric brand of humor she had already brought into the competition earlier in the season.
But amid the camp and comedy, Jade and Matthew found themselves sharing a more reflective conversation.
Matthew opened up about his marriage to his husband, prompting a discussion about same-sex marriage and the differences between their respective countries.
When asked about the status of same-sex marriage in the Philippines, Jade pointed to the country’s continuing limitations and the conservative attitudes that remain prevalent in Philippine society.
For Jade, the Philippines risks falling behind its neighboring countries on LGBTQIA+ rights, particularly as conservative political and social forces continue to shape the national conversation around same-sex relationships.
Still, the queen made clear that the fight is far from over.
Jade reiterated the need for continued advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights in the Philippines, including renewed attention to the proposed SOGIE Equality Bill, which seeks to protect people from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression.
"If nakikinig kayo, tinatawag ko ang mga nakaupo to please evaluate the [SOGIESC Equality] Bill."
Her message was simple: the fight continues, and so does she.
"We're still fighting for it...para sa aming karapatan and hindi ako titigil to inspire others and use my platforms for advocacy. Sana maipasa na [ang SOGIESC Equality Bill] soon," Jade said.
On the main stage, the queens unveiled their transformations, with Jade walking alongside Matthew, whom she christened Miss Yasmin Hard Suso.
The pair hit the runway with Jade serving bombshell realness alongside her newly minted drag daughter. While the presentation was comparatively pared back from some of Jade’s more elaborate runway moments earlier in the competition, the look stayed true to the makeover brief.
Jade’s concept leaned into the telenovela icon Marimar, with Yasmin functioning as the perfect partner to her larger-than-life presentation.
The runway earned a mixed reception from the judges. Lazy Susan appeared less convinced by the execution, while Josh Cavallo enthusiastically embraced the presentation. Michelle Visage, meanwhile, highlighted the transformation of Jasmin into a distinctly Jade-inspired look, effectively putting her makeover partner through a “Jade So” drag lens.
But when the critiques were tallied, it was Michael Marouli and Art Simone who rose to the top following the challenge. Lala Ri, Jade So and Vybe, meanwhile, found themselves in the bottom.
With her place in the competition suddenly at risk, Jade made no secret of how much the opportunity meant to her.
She reminded the other queens that she had been waiting for another chance to return to the arena after her original season ended—and now that the opportunity had finally arrived, she was determined to make the most of it.
“I’m not a worrier. I’m a warrior,” Jade told Michael and Art in her plea to remain in the competition.
The lip-sync battle ultimately came down to Michael and Art, who went head-to-head to the Spice Girls’ “Who Do You Think You Are.”
Michael ultimately emerged victorious, securing the power to decide which queen would leave the competition. Her choice was Lala Ri, sending the US queen home and leaving the other queens to battle it out in the grand finale.
For Jade, the moment marks her second finale appearance within the franchise. She previously reached the final four in her original season, and now returns to the brink of a crown with another opportunity to finish the race.
She has consistently landed in the top in recent weeks, beginning with her first badge during the opening design challenge, where she created a look using a metallic red Lycra. Jade followed it with victories in the “Franken-Drag” and “House of Whores: A Trilogy of Terror” challenges.
Now, with the crown within reach, M1ss Jade So has one final task: turn her return into a reign and become the inaugural winner of "Drag Race Down Under vs the World.
