From unfailingly leaving the madlang people in awe of her smarts and eloquence every time she appears on “It’s Showtime” in the early parts of her career, Princess Kathryn Caponpon, who’s more popular by her screenname Kulot, has been impressing us with her promising acting skills, which we’ve been seeing in “Coco Martin’s Sigabo.”
She plays the role of Kulot, daughter of Mang Babot (Andres Balano Jr), whom Coco Martin’s character, Gabo, has already helped a couple of times, along with other child scavengers from their community. Their first encounter was when he saved them from a furious storeowner whose goods they had stolen out of severe hunger. Aside from paying the total amount for everything they’d taken, Gabo also gave them money to buy food that they could share with their families and lectured them not to commit the same mistake again.
Gabo’s latest benevolent act for Kulot and her friends came when he bought food for them with the help of his pretend wife, Gloria (Julia Montes), after they and their parents paid him a visit at his house to personally thank him for what he had done the night before. Despite knowing how dangerous it could have been, especially when he attempted to fight the attackers all by himself, he still chose to put himself at risk to help them.
While she’s been doing a great job portraying her character, Kulot proves that she can also be a good CCM reporter, as seen in this episode of CCM Exclusives. As everyone on set waited for the next scenes they were going to film for the day, Kulot was tasked with conducting a little interview with lead stars Coco and Julia, who both gladly responded to her questions.
Kulot began by quizzing Coco about the secret behind his admirable hard work, to which he replied by enumerating his role models, including his beloved grandma and the other people he looks up to. He added that his family also serves as his inspiration to work hard everyday because he wants to help his family and provide well for them.
She then turned to Julia and asked how she could become a great actress like her. The “Prime Actress” advised her, “Basta mahalin mo ‘yong trabaho mo, tapos syempre dapat makikinig ka sa mga directors, sa mga veteran actors. Lahat ng mga tips na kinukuwento nila, ‘yong kuwento ng buhay nila pakikinggan n’yo lagi kasi marami kayong matututunan.”
Even though Kulot had warned that her next question for him was going to be hard to answer, Coco actually didn’t have a hard time choosing which he prefers more between directing and acting. The award-winning actor-director revealed that he would choose to be an actor mainly because he knows how difficult it is to become a director. While an actor’s usual sole concern is how he’s going to portray his character, a director must oversee everything—from the production and script to the actors and filming locations.
Although juggling his duties as a creative consultant, writer, actor, director, and producer of “Sigabo” can be really challenging, Coco shares that he is happy knowing that he’s able to do her work well, which is why he strives to share his blessings with others. Coming from humble beginnings, he learned to dream big and work hard to get to where he is today, and he is now grateful for the opportunity to share what he has with others.
