Broadway star Lea Salonga is set to take on the lead role in Theatre Group Asia's (TGA) upcoming production of "Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba," scheduled to premiere in February 2027.
The production company announced Salonga's casting on Facebook, sharing a video message from the actress, who recently became the first Filipino to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
"Ako si Lea Salonga, ang inyong Bernarda Alba sa pinakaunang produksyon ng Theatre Group Asia sa wiking Filipino," she said in the video.
"Hihintayin ko kayo sa aking tahanan. Magkita-kita tayo sa teatro," she added.
Based on "The House of Bernarda Alba" by Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca, the production follows the titular character, a mother who declares eight years of mourning after the death of her second husband and demands absolute obedience from her five daughters. However, the arrival of a potential suitor disrupts the household.
In a press statement, Salonga shared she had yet to encounter the play before, which she said "may work in my favor as I have no preconceived notions or strong opinions."
"This is an absolutely important work to tackle. It fits our culture and is timely given the state of current events in the world," she said.
The production will be staged at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Makati.
Ticket sales begin this October. Interested buyers can sign up on TGA's website for the subscribers' pre-sale.
