MANILA — The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte kicks into high gear starting Thursday as the impeachment court conducts whole-day hearings until October 15 before taking a break for budget deliberations.
Benjamin Tolosa, Jr., legal spokesperson of the House prosecution team, said prosecutors will first present two officials from the Register of Deeds of Davao City and Tagum City, Davao del Norte to testify on real properties under the name of the respondent or her husband, Manases Carpio.
Next on the list of witnesses is Anti-Money Laundering Council Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura who previously told lawmakers about “suspicious" and "covered" bank transactions amounting to P6.77 billion linked to Duterte and her husband.
Tolosa said the testimonies of the witnesses will show if the VP’s declared net worth matches her actual wealth.
“Meron tayong makikitang properties under the name of the Vice President and her husband. Titingnan natin kung nandun sa SALN,” he said, adding that it is the prosecution’s theory that the VP did not declare all her wealth in her SALN.
“So far, we have to consider everything, kung lumalalampas ba ang value ng properties.”
Other witnesses set to be presented by the prosecution are former senator Antonio Trillanes IV and bank representatives who will testify on the Duterte couple’s bank accounts. Earlier this month, prosecutors said they had more than 1,800 financial documents and up to 25 potential witnesses for their unexplained wealth presentation.
LRA officials, AMLC chief, Trillanes next witnesses in VP Sara trial—prosecution
Tolosa said the prosecution has decided that it will present the AMLC first before Trillanes, adding that it will be up to the prosecution how it will counter the defense’s possible allegation that Trillanes’ testimony will be hearsay.
The AMLC earlier confirmed several financial transactions made by Duterte, which were first mentioned by Trillanes in his sworn affidavit.
Buenaventura said 18 financial transactions listed in Trillanes’ annexes and picked at random by House lawmakers matched AMLC records, including a P16,852,832.94 transaction on December 9, 2014.
