MANILA — Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo has nominated and endorsed Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen to succeed Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, who is set to retire November this year.
In her letter to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. dated September 11, which was received by the Judicial and Bar Council, Robredo noted that Leonen is the most senior among all the justices of the Supreme Court.
Robredo said Leonen has shown “neither fear nor favor” and has provided inspiration not only among his colleagues but also among appellate justices, trial courts and the legal academe throughout the country.
“On a personal note, I have witnessed his efforts not only to ensure the proper interpretation of our Constitution and our laws, but also his efforts to ensure social justice, human rights, and institutional integrity,” Robredo said.
Leonen to serve as OIC when Gesmundo retires as chief justice
Robredo also said that Leonen has displayed effective collegial leadership in the administration of justice, having served in various positions in the judiciary.
“I have no doubt that his appointment will be acceptable to all sectors, including big business, small and medium scale entrepreneurs, local and national government officials, and those who suffer from poverty, inequality, and disempowerment,” Robredo said.
Earlier, former Supreme Court Associate Justice Arturo Brion also wrote a letter to the JBC dated September 4 to nominate Associate Justice Jose Midas Marquez.
Brion noted Marquez’s “exemplary work ethic” as the SC’s court administrator during his tenure in the court.
“He is a person of proven competence, integrity, probity and independence,” Brion said.
