MANILA – The special elections for the lone district of Batanes has been set on November 28, the Commission on Elections announced Friday.
This is for the replacement of the late Batanes Lone District Representative Ciriaco Gato Jr. who passed away this month.
“November 28 na po ang ating exact date na gagawin ang ating special election diyan po sa probinsya ng Batanes,” Comelec Chairman George Garcia said in an ambush interview at the Comelec headquarters in Manila Friday, September 25.
While Batanes only has more or less 15,000 registered voters, Garcia said they need to address potential logistical issues.
“Ang isa po sa pinoproblema ni Comelec ngayon ay medyo alam niyo po kasi tag-ulan, may bagyo pa nga po kalimitan pagpasok ng November at December,” he said.
“Meron po kaming mga pinag-iisipan kung paano maso-solve namin ‘yung problema lalo na kung mga isla po kasi doon and therefore kinakailangang pagsama-samahin ‘yung result ng provincial canvassing,” the Comelec chief added.
The poll body has allocated P10 million to be charged from its savings or realignment, if necessary, to prepare for the special elections.
The calendar of activities for the special polls will soon be released, Garcia assured.
