MANILA — The trough or extension of super typhoon Choi-wan outside the Philippine area of responsibility will continue to bring rains over the central and southern Philippines on Monday, PAGASA said.
Cloudy skies with scattered rains are expected in Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Mindanao.
Choi-wan, which intensified into a super typhoon on Sunday evening, is not expected to enter the PAR.
At 8 a.m. Monday, it was located 2,580 kilometers east northeast of Luzon’s northern tip.
It has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour with gustiness up to 230 kph and is moving north northwestward at 15 kph.
Meanwhile, warm and humid conditions will persist in Metro Manila and the rest of the country. Isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms remain likely in the afternoon or evening.
“Itong trough ng bagyo ay inaasahan nating hanggang ngayong araw dahil bukas lalayo ang bagyong Choi-wan kaya lalayo rin ang trough ng bagyo. Pero ang kapalit nito, itong Intertropical Convergence Zone o ITCZ na makakaapekto sa Palawan, Visayas, at Mindanao,” senior weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio explained in PAGASA’s Monday morning broadcast.
(Choi-wan’s trough will only affect parts of the country today as the storm will move away. However, the Intertropical Convergence Zone will take over and affect Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao from Tuesday.)
Aurelio added that northeasterly winds, or winds blowing from the northeast, could also affect northern Luzon beginning Tuesday.
PAGASA previously said that the southwest monsoon or Habagat may be terminated within the first week of October, essentially ending the rainy season over the western section of the country.
A brief transition period, during which the humid Easterlies will prevail, is expected to follow, before the start of the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan season within the second half of October.
