Asiad: Mangin bows to Chinese foe, pockets taekwondo silver

Filipina taekwondo jin Tachiana Mangin will bring home a silver medal from her first-ever Asian Games after losing to her Chinese opponent in the final on Friday night at the Toyohashi Gymnasium.

Mangin, who at 18 years old is making her Asiad debut, absorbed a 0-2 loss to China's Ma Jingyue in the women's -49kg gold medal match, where neither competitor scored a point.

Ma's aggression and activity put her over the top, however, with judges seeing both rounds in her favor. 

It has nonetheless been an impressive campaign for Mangin, who stunned home bet Okamoto Ruka in the semifinal with a clutch display.

Mangin won the opening round with a late point, but was forced to a deciding round by Okamoto.

She scored with her final kick in the very last second of the third round to claim the win and advance to the gold medal match. 

Mangin adds the Asiad silver to the gold medal that she won in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok last December.
