(UPDATED) An Asian Games medal continues to elude veteran Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio, who bowed out of contention in the women's 60kg class with a loss in the quarterfinals.
Petecio was outdueled by China's Yang Chengyu on Monday at the Nishio Gym, with the Filipina absorbing a unanimous decision defeat.
It was a tough outing for Petecio, who had been hoping to assure herself of at least a bronze medal had she emerged triumphant.
"Ito lang ang kulang sa medalya ko," she lamented afterward.
But Petecio fell behind almost immediately, losing the opening round 8-10 and playing catch-up the rest of the way.
Yang proved to be the better boxer, however, keeping Petecio at a distance and weathering her efforts.
All five judges scored the bout in Yang's favor.
"Olympian at world champion 'yan," Petecio said of her opponent. "Timbang niya 'to. Takbo at suntok ang plano namin sa first round, pero nabigla kami sa dikitan."
"Nalamangan kaagad [at] huli na ang adjustment," she acknowledged. "Siguro, more training pa. Sana makabawi sa AIMAG [Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games]."
With her loss, Olympian Carlo Paalam remains the lone medal hope of the Philippine boxing team in the Asiad.
