Asiad: Ubas places 11th in long jump final; Bossong tops heat in 800m

(UPDATED) Veteran campaigner Janry Ubas finished 11th among 12 competitors in the final of the men's long jump in the 2026 Asian Games, Monday evening at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya.

Ubas leapt 7.39-meters, 0.78-m behind eventual gold medalist Shi Yuhao of China who leapt a season-best of 8.17-m.

India's Sreeshankar Murali took silver with a mark of 8.07-m, while Anvar Anvarov of Uzbekistan completed the podium at 8.06-m.

It was a tight race to the podium, with Lin Yu-tang of Chinese-Taipei missing out on the bronze with a leap of 8.05-m.

In another final, the Philippines finished fifth in the women's 4x100m relay after clocking a season-best time of 43.60-seconds.

The team, composed of Naomi Johnson, Jessica Laurance, Zion Rose Nelson, and Lianne Pama, finished 0.64-s behind eventual gold-medalists China (42.96-s).

Thailand also recorded a season-best time of 43.51-s for silver, just eclipsing host Japan which settled for bronze with a time of 43.52-s.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Victoria Bossong emerged as a medal hope for the Philippines after topping her heat in the women's 800-m with a time of 2:02.34 seconds.

China's Li Chunhui (2:02.35) and Uzbekistan's Sabokhat Samijonova (2:02.64) also qualified from Heat 2.

Bossong will be in action on Tuesday, along with celebrated pole vaulter EJ Obiena who will try to defend his gold medal.

Obiena topped the podium in Hangzhou in 2023 with a games-record clearance of 5.90-m.

He enters the competition with a personal-best mark of 5.91-m.
