MANILA — The Philippines picked up their second straight win in the 20th Asian Games softball tournament after shutting out Thailand, 7-0, on Tuesday at the Anjo Softball Grounds in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
The victory improved the Philippines to a 2-2 win-loss record, moving the Blu Girls to solo fourth place in the standings.
The Philippines struck first in the second inning as Mylia Perez and Reyae Villamin registered RBIs to put the Blu Girls ahead, 2-0.
Captain Charlotte Sales, who sparked the Philippines' comeback against South Korea in the previous game, then delivered a two-run home run to left field to stretch the lead to 5-0.
A Thailand fielding error on a fly ball hit by Ma. Angelu Gabriel allowed the Philippines to add another run in the fourth inning, before Sydney Vitangcol's RBI in the fifth pushed the lead to 7-0 and secured the win via mercy rule.
The Blu Girls will look to build momentum when they face Singapore on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
