NAGOYA – Young Filipina tennis players Tenny Madis and Stefi Aludo are taking with them the lessons they learned at the Asian Games, after ending their women's doubles campaign on Wednesday.
The Filipina pair fell to Chinese Taipei’s Hao-ching Chan and Fang-hsien Wu, 3-6, 1-6, in the Round of 16, the first time they played a match outdoors in a sunny Nagoya setting.
Madis and Aludo tried to keep up with the fifth seed Chinese Taipei duo, managing to stay close early in the match before their opponents took control to get the opening set.
In the second set, the Chan and Wu leaned on their experience to overpower the young Filipina duo and eventually book a spot in the quarterfinals.
Despite seeing an end to their Asian Games campaign, Aludo and Madis were happy with their performance in their continental showcase debut.
"Yung performance po namin is 100%. Like, for us, we fight po till the end.Yung communication namin and composure namin on court andun parati at the end of the match. So, sobrang happy kami ni Tenny the way we played," Aludo told POC Media.
"Super saya po namin ni Tenny kasi nakakakuha po kami and then nakapanalo kami ng first round ng Asian Games. Grabe. Isa to sa pinakamalaking events and all Asia po talaga andito. And siyempre yung mga top pro na mga Asian players andito po," she added.
The young tennis players relished the opportunity to play in a high level tournament, with Filipino fans cheering them on from the sidelines.
"Sa support din ng mga Pilipino, nag-boost din po sa amin yun. And yun po yung nakakapag-ano sa amin ni Tenny na lumaban lang lumaban," Aludo shared.

"Grabe po talaga mag-support tayong mga Filipino sa mga atletang Pilipino. Bale, thankful po talaga kami ni Stefi dahil sa mga nag-susupport talaga sa amin.Grabe po yung unending support ng Filipino," Madis added.
The two were also glad to finally get to play outdoors with the sun shining, after several days of rain in Nagoya halting and even moving play indoors.
"Sobrang saya po kasi lumabas na talaga yung araw. And siyempre po, yung mga Pilipino na nag-effort din pumunta dito na supportan kami. Bibigyan din namin sila ng magandang laban. Sobrang grateful po kami sa mga tao na nag-susuporta through online and yung mga nandito po," Aludo said.
The longtime mentor of Madis and Aludo, coach Bobie Angelo was present to watch his students play at the biggest tournament of their lives.
"Okay naman [sila], magaling yung kalaban more experience than them. Pero lumaban naman yung dalawa. They did their best. Pero yun nga, I think more exposure and more training," Angelo told POC Media.
"Kasi coming from juniors, yung mindset nila nasa juniors pa at nag-start sila ng pro. Pero eventually okay narin yan. Lalo na nasa University of Hawaii sila, so mga pro na mga kasama. I hope na mag-level up sila," he added.
Angelo is optimistic his students will continue improving especially with their move to Hawaii to compete in the collegiate ranks.
"Happy tayo dun nanalo sila sa first round. Happy naman sa performance nila, pero maraming magaling dito at kailangan talaga mag-level up sa mindset, sa footwork at lahat," he shared.
"Nag-iyakan nga kami nung nagpaalam sila, siyempre matagal kaming magkasama. I was there for them all the way and then masaya sila, masaya ako," Angelo said.
After the Asian Games, the two will return to the University of Hawaii where they will bring all the lessons they learned from the continental showcase.
"Madami kaming natutunan kasi the way they played and the way yung mga muscles nila and the way they prepared, yun po yung i-lolook forward namin," Aludo said.
"Sa experience ko po ngayon, nakikita ko po lahat ng mga players dito na gaano po sila ka-focus before the match. And grabe po, makikita namin sa gym na doon sila, paano sila mag-stretch, paano sila mag-mobility. So siguro yun yung experience na kailangan pa naming matutunan ni Stefi, yung composure nila," Madis shared.
Madis and Aludo will be competing in an invitational next month, as they await hopefully their next tour of duty for the national team.
