MNL48 is set to begin a new chapter as the group officially announced plans to change both its operating company name and group name in January 2026. The announcement was shared through an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), marking a significant shift for the pioneering Filipino idol group as it continues to evolve with the changing P-pop landscape.
In its statement, the group emphasized that the decision is part of its forward-looking plans, while still recognizing the journey it has shared with fans since its formation.
“We would like to inform you that MNL48 plans to change both its operating company name and group name in January 2026,” the statement read.
The group added that the move is meant to open a new chapter “while cherishing the history, experiences, and strong bonds we have built together with our fans over the years.”

Despite the upcoming changes, MNL48 assured supporters that its core identity remains intact.
“The spirit of MNL48 and the dedication of its members will remain unchanged,” the statement said, noting that further details, including the new group name and future plans, will be announced at a later date.
As MNL48 prepares changes in its group name and operating company name, the group reiterated its gratitude to fans for their continued support.
“We sincerely thank all our fans for their continued support, and we kindly ask for your ongoing understanding and encouragement,” the statement concluded, signaling that while change is coming, the journey with its supporters continues.
Following the announcement, fans took to social media to share mixed reactions, ranging from curiosity to concern. Some questioned how the changes might affect the group’s music and identity.
“Wait what? So you guys wont be singing 48 groups songs anymore?,” one fan asked.
“Mejo nakakakaba naman to,” another shared.
Others speculated on possible new names for the group, with one fan suggesting, “AKB48 TEAM MANILA or AKB48 TEAM ML 😆 Just like their sister groups in Taiwan and China.”
Earlier this year, MNL48 also announced its comeback after years of hiatus, alongside the transfer of its operations to the newly established Japanese corporation MNL48 Inc. Under this framework, the group officially resumed activities, welcoming new members and setting fresh goals as P-pop continues to grow and change.
According to the group’s official website, MNL48 currently operates under MNL48 Inc. led by President Shingo Sato, Producer and Director Lynn Hazuki, and Director Taro Katsumata.

The group’s return to the stage included major milestones such as the MNL48: Reboot and Rise mini-festival in April and the Dream Beyond Concert held last October 11, where fifth-generation members were introduced and leadership updates were announced. These events highlighted MNL48’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and move forward.
MNL48 was formed in 2018 through the efforts of ABS-CBN and Hallohallo Entertainment, becoming the first idol group of its kind in the Philippines. The sing-and-dance group was created through a four-month talent search aired on It’s Showtime, introducing a new idol culture to the local entertainment scene. It is a sister group of Japan’s AKB48, whose influence has led to the creation of similar groups across Asia.
Under ABS-CBN and Star Music, MNL48 released songs namely “Aitakatta – Gustong Makita,” “Talulot Ng Sakura,” “Amazing Grace,” “Palusot Ko’y Maybe,” and became the interpreter for the Himig Handog 2018 entry “Dalawang Pag-Ibig Niya” along with Sheena Belarmino and Krystal Brimner.
MNL48 is also famous for P-Pop hits like "Pag-ibig Fortune Cookie," "High Tension," "River," "First Rabbit," and "Ikaw Ang Melody".
