MANILA — After a period of hiatus, Filipino idol group MNL48 is finally back and ready to welcome a new generation of members.
The girl group, known as the Philippine sister group of Japan’s AKB48, is now opening auditions for its 5th generation, aiming to complete its 20-member roster by adding three more girls to the current 17 active members.
“We are looking for very dedicated, passionate girls,” shared newly appointed captain Jamie. “Talent-wise, you could always work on that. But what matters most really is the passion and dedication that we share as MNL48. And that’s what we’re looking for in the fifth generation.”
In the ever-evolving P-pop scene filled with new and emerging girl groups, Captain Jamie emphasized what sets MNL48 apart: “What makes MNL48 different really is our concept. Since we are from AKB48 from Japan, our mother group, we follow a concept which is ‘idols you can meet.’ We started from scratch. All of us here didn’t have any experience mostly. Our fans followed our journey as we grew into idols inside the group.”
The captain further explained the expectations from the upcoming generation of members: “They have to audition, prepare their performance, their dancing, their singing, and most importantly how they present themselves. What we cherish most is authenticity. Each member has to show who they really are both in personality and talent.”

Taking on the mantle of leadership, Jamie acknowledged the legacy of their predecessors: “As the incoming captain, the pressure is there. The senpais left their mark and I always tell the girls not to waste the hard work and the standards set by the first generation. We’re the ones who will continue their legacy.”
Meanwhile, member Cole opened up about the discipline required within the 48 group system. “One of the biggest challenges would be how we portray ourselves outside,” she said. “We follow golden rules like being prompt, proper, and always looking our best. It’s tough, especially when all you want is to be comfortable, but these rules shape who we are as idols.”
In a major announcement, former MNL48 ace member Abby Trinidad is also making her return not as a performer, but as the new general manager of the group.
“I am very happy na nandito ulit ako sa group kahit hindi ako member ngayon,” Abby said. “Alam ko 'yung mga natutunan ko as a member ay ma-aapply ko ngayon as their general manager. I’m very much thankful sa mga viewers na patuloy na nagmamahal.”
