In her latest Instagram post, the 47-year-old actress paid tribute to the well-loved actor who played the titular role in Dawson’s Creek where they worked together for over six seasons from 1998 to 2003. Katie shared the handwritten letter she made him in her post. In the caption, she wrote,

“I formed some words with a heavy heart. This is a lot to process. I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James’ journey. He is beloved. Kimberly (James's wife), we love you and will be here always for you and your beautiful children. ❤️”

As one of the most iconic characters in the show, Katie played the role of Dawson’s childhood best friend Joey. But even in real life, their close friendship remains even 23 years after the series ended.

In her letter, Katie wrote,

“Thank you. To share space with your imagination is sacred – breathing the same air in the land of make believe and trusting that each others’ hearts are safe in their expression …

These are some of the memories, along with laughter, conversations about life, James Taylor songs— adventures of a unique youth…

Bravery. Compassion. Selflessness. Strength. An appreciation for life and the action taken to live life with the integrity that life is art – creating a beautiful marriage, six loving children — the journey of a hero.

I mourn this loss with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint on it.

To Kimberly and the children, we are here for you always. And will always be there to shower you with Love and Compassion.”

It was in 2023 when James first shared his stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis. Last year he announced that he would be sharing memorabilia from his various TV shows to help raise funds for his costly cancer treatment. Part of the prized possessions which were auctioned off included an outfit he wore in the Dawson’s Creek pilot episode and a hat featured in his 1999 film Varsity Blues.

Last September, a Dawson's Creek reunion was held after 22 years, with almost the entire cast in attendance to help raise money for cancer charities. James had to pull out of attending the event live due to health issues but made a video appearance via Zoom.

Since announcing his passing, the Van Der Beek family has already raised more than $1.3 millionx on a GoFundMe to help cover “essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education.”
