Sophia Laforteza described her involvement in the Forgotten Island soundtrack as one of the most meaningful opportunities she has had, especially as she got to put her own touch on a song that reflects values close to her heart.
The KATSEYE leader lent her vocals to a remixed version of INXS’ “Never Tear Us Apart,” which is featured in the DreamWorks Animation film. While recording the song in the studio, Sophia opened up about what the opportunity meant to her.
“It feels good. When I was told I was going to be a part of this project, I remember thinking this is the most Sophia thing I could do as one of the first things I do on my own. Because of just how much it aligns with everything I believe in, my culture, celebrating women, family, friendship," she said.
Forgotten Island follows best friends Jo (H.E.R.) and Raissa (Liza Soberano) as they try to find their way home after discovering a mysterious portal that leads them to the fantastical island of Nakali, where they encounter magical and mythological creatures.
For Sophia, the film’s focus on friendship and staying connected to one’s roots made the project even more special.
“For me, friendship is one of the most beautiful journeys you can go on in life. Staying true to where you come from and being proud of it and holding onto that. This is one of the most beautiful things I feel like I'll ever do."
She ended: “One more? Tayo na!”
Sophia’s participation in the film has also drawn excitement from fans, many of whom expressed how proud they are to see her contribute to the movie’s soundtrack.
"I absolutely adore Sophia’s cover so so much! She sounded so beautiful and heavenly! I’m so proud of her! Thanks for having her on the soundtrack! 💜,” one wrote. “This song has been on repeat since it was released and I can’t wait to watch the film🥹💝,” another added.
Back in June, Filipino-American Angela Leus, Senior Vice President of Film Music at Universal Pictures, shared why Sophia was tapped to give the classic song a new interpretation.
“It was important for us to use the original INXS recording because it signified their friendship as young girls. But as you see them grow, that’s where the idea to bring in Sophia Laforteza from KATSEYE — who’s a badass — came from. She put a new twist on it to signify the evolution of their friendship,” Angela said, adding: “The song parallels their friendship and captures the journey from where they were to what they become.”
Also lending their voices to the Forgotten Island soundtrack are the Nation's Girl Group BINI, Broadway icon Lea Salonga, P-Pop boy group SB19, and lead voice actress, H.E.R. And Liza, among others.
The full soundtrack is now available on digital streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.
Forgotten Island is now showing nationwide in the Philippines.
