Asiad debutant Victoria Bossong strikes bronze in women's 800m

(UPDATED) Filipino-American middle-distance runner Victoria Bossong captured the bronze medal in the women's 800m at the 20th Asian Games on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The 23-year-old Harvard University standout clocked 2:05.34 in a rain-soaked race at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.

"This is the biggest competition I've been to by far. And to just land on the podium is a big accomplishment, even though it's not gold," Bossong said.

"These games are a good experience, just learning how to race well. I'm fast, I'm fit, but there's part of my, you know, racing element that I just don't have there quite yet," she added.

China's Hongjiao Wu copped gold in 2:04.49, while Bahrain's Nelly Korir settled for silver in 2:05.16.

Bossong now turns her attention to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, hoping to return to the global stage in Philippine colors.

"I'm looking forward to showing off the Philippines colors there again. I want a podium at the Olympics. So this was honestly like a very good stepping stone," she said.

Bossong's bronze marks the Philippines' first women's 800m Asiad medal since Isabel Cruz, who claimed bronze in the event at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok.
