MANILA — Five teams will contest the two remaining semifinal spots in the women's division of the V-League Collegiate Challenge at the Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City.
Sporting identical 3-3 records are University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, University of Santo Tomas, University of the East and San Beda, while College of Saint Benilde, with a 2-4 card, still has a slim shot of advancing to the next round.
So far, Adamson University and Arellano University have sewed up the first two Final Four berths with identical 5-1 slates, with their respective final preliminary round rankings still to be determined.
The semifinals will be a pair of best-of-three duels, with the top-ranked team taking on the No. 4 side.
The Lady Altas, who have the most match points among teams fighting for the two remaining semis spots with 10, hope to get the job done in their 12 noon duel with the also-ran Lady Knights on Saturday, while the Lady Warriors, who currently have nine points, face a huge test in their bid against the Lady Chiefs at 10 a.m.
On Sunday, the Golden Tigresses, who also have nine points, cannot afford to make any missteps in their 10 a.m. clash with the Lady Blazers, who, at eight points, need a convincing win and hope for the best in the tiebreaker to advance.
Meanwhile, the Lady Red Spikers, who at seven points need favorable results in earlier games to stand a chance for at least the last semis berth, play the Lady Falcons at 12 noon.
In the men's division, UST, which recovered from a 0-2 start to move up to fourth place at 3-3, tries to complete the semifinals cast against unbeaten Far Eastern University in a rivalry match at 5 p.m. Saturday, right after the National University-Arellano clash at 3 p.m.
Prelims action wraps up Sunday with sister schools College of Saint Benilde and De La Salle colliding at 3 p.m., while new Letran coach Jessie Lopez goes up against his alma mater as the Knights and Tamaraws collide at 5 p.m.
The Tamaraws (5-0), the Knights (5-1), and the Bulldogs (4-2) are already through the semis, with their final preliminary round ranking still to be decided.
The Blazers, with a 2-4 record and eight points, still have a chance of making it to the next round by beating the Green Spikers convincingly and a Golden Spikers loss in three or four sets.
La Salle and Arellano also have 2-4 slates, but with both teams toting six points, the two teams were eliminated as they could attain only a maximum nine, as UST already has 10.
