OPM band Sunkissed Lola is entering a new chapter with its latest single “Edi Magalit Ka,” exploring a folk-country sound while offering a different perspective on love and relationships.
In an exclusive interview with PUSH ABS-CBN, the band opened up about the story behind the song, which was first written five years ago.
“‘Edi Magalit Ka’ was first written by Dan (Ombao) in 2021 with a more prideful tone. When Alvin (Serito) co-wrote the song later on, it evolved into a reflection on how conflict is inevitable in relationships, but ultimately, you choose the person over your pride and ego,” the band explained.
Through the song, Sunkissed Lola wanted to move away from the usual themes, saying: “Through this song, we wanted to offer a different perspective on love, moving away from the usual hugot and yearning themes.”
Bringing a new sound for the band after more than a year, Sunkissed Lola shared how they wanted to focus on the message of the song.
“We leaned more towards a folk-country sound, which is something we haven’t explored before, incorporating guitar slides and ambient elements that give the song a distinct country feel. We also focused heavily on the lyrics because we wanted them to be the highlight of the song. Our producer, Brian Lotho, also played a huge part in helping us bring the sound we envisioned to life,” they shared.
According to the band, they took their time deciding which song would be the right follow-up to the EP and achieving their goal to give a song that could best connect with their listeners.
“To be honest, we’ve just been busy with gigs and promoting our EP, ‘Olaholah,’ which was our last release before ‘Edi Magalit Ka.’ We also took some time to figure out which song from our existing lineup felt right to release next," they admitted.
“We chose 'Edi Magalit Ka' because we felt it was something a lot of people could relate to and enjoy. It’s easy on the ears, and the title itself is a phrase that a lot of people have probably said at some point,” they added.
Beyond the music, the single also marks a more visible chapter for Sunkissed Lola.
“We’ve already released an official visualizer for the song, where we finally put our faces front and center after keeping a more anonymous presence since our debut. For this new chapter of SunKissed Lola, we wanted to put a face to the band,” they said.
The band also revealed that they wanted Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition 2 Kapuso Big Winner Caprice Cayateno to star in a dream music video for their new track.
Formed in 2021 in Olongapo, Zambales, Sunkissed Lola is known for its heartfelt songs that blend modern pop, rock and Filipino romantic storytelling. The band is composed of Laura Lacbain on vocals, Alvin “Bino” Serito on vocals and guitar, Dan Ombao on vocals and guitar, Danj Quimson on bass, and Genson Viloria on drums.
The band rose to widespread recognition through its breakout hit “Pasilyo,” which helped establish Sunkissed Lola as one of the notable names in the current OPM scene.
In a press release, Sunkissed Lola shared how they are taking “a more mature and intentional era” as they are approaching their fifth anniversary
“We know our strengths and now we are able to maximize it,” Alvin said. “We are more intentional in releasing this song.”
