MANILA — The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will continue to affect central and southern Philippines on Monday, according to PAGASA.
Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected in Palawan, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Lanao del Sur, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga.
The weather agency warned of possible flash floods and landslides during occasions of moderate to heavy rains in these areas.
The ITCZ is the region where clouds and thunderstorms form as winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet.
“Ang epekto ng ITCZ ay inaasahang magtatagal sa Palawan, Visayas, at Mindanao bukas at sa Miyerkules,” senior weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said in PAGASA’s morning broadcast.
(ITCZ may continue to affect Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao through Wednesday.)
On the other hand, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be warm and humid, with likely isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.
The country is currently on a monsoon break.
“‘Yung southwest monsoon or Habagat ay umaabot lamang sa Indochina,” Aurelio explained.
(The Southwest Monsoon or Habagat is only reaching Indochina.)
The Hagabat season typically ends during the first half of the month of October.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Surigae, locally known as Queenie, which exited the Philippine area of responsibility before noon Sunday, is nearing super typhoon strength.
At 3 a.m. Monday, it had maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour with gustiness up to 215 kph.
It was located 1,055 kilometers northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon and moving east northeastward at 15 kph.
Surigae is not affecting any part of the country.
No other weather disturbance is being monitored within or near the PAR now.
