Daniel Marcelo starred with 16 points, six rebounds, and a steal for the Red Lions, who recovered from their season-opening loss to De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, 77-68, to the delight of head coach Yuri Escueta.
“It’s nice to get our first win. We played much better, with much energy compared to that CSB game,” said Escueta, whose squad zoomed to a 33-18 lead in the first as Marcelo notched eight points on two three-pointers in that span.
Jimmy Reyes was equally vital with 15 points, five assists, and four rebounds to help the Red Lions avoid squandering their 17-point lead, while Lawrence Hawkins added 13 points, 12 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
On the other hand, the Pirates mounted a comeback and got to as close as seven, 73-66, after a Lance Aurigue basket with still 4:47 left in the fourth period, but the Red Lions held on and eventually handed LPU its second loss in three games.
Matthew Rubico led Lyceum with 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while Mac Guadana added 14 points and six rebounds. Renz Villegas finished with 12 points before being ejected due to his flagrant foul 2 on RC Calimag.
