MANILA — A large portion of a hillside collapsed in Barangay San Teodoro, Mabini, Batangas, on Friday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of several residents.
According to the Mabini Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), the landslide also caused part of the road and a riprap structure to collapse, prompting the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to close the Bauan-Mabini Road in Sitio Guitisan and Sitio Balanoy.
Four electric poles of the Batangas Electric Cooperative II (BATELEC II) were also toppled, cutting power supply to two barangays.
Two families were evacuated from the area due to the threat of another landslide.
The landslide occurred at around 6 p.m. on Friday. Residents had reportedly noticed water seeping onto the road as early as Friday morning.
During an inspection, DPWH personnel found water flowing from the upper portion of the mountain.
The MDRRMO said the landslide may have been caused by saturated soil following rains brought by the southwest monsoon, or habagat, in recent days.
The landslide was estimated to be about 200 meters long.
No injuries were reported.
