MAMBURAO, Occidental Mindoro — A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Occidental Mindoro on Wednesday morning, shaking several areas across the province and nearby parts of Oriental Mindoro, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The earthquake occurred at around 9:34 a.m., with its epicenter located 23 kilometers west of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 10 kilometers.

The tremor was felt at a “moderately strong” Intensity IV in Mamburao and Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro. This intensity feels like the passing of a heavy truck and could make hanging objects “swing considerably.”
Classes at all levels in Mamburao were suspended on Wednesday to give way to the inspection of school buildings after the quake.
The quake was also felt at a “weak” Intensity III in Abra de Ilog and Looc in Occidental Mindoro, as well as in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.
Meanwhile, Intensity I was recorded in San Jose, Magsaysay, and Calintaan in Occidental Mindoro, and Pinamalayan in Oriental Mindoro.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was not expected to cause damage, although aftershocks could occur.
